Vincent Van Gogh Paintings

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. He was born on March 30, 1853, in Zundert, Netherlands, to Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. Despite being born into a religious and cultured family, Van Gogh struggled to find his place in the world and worked various jobs before finding his calling as an artist.

Van Gogh's early works, mostly still lifes and depictions of peasant laborers, reflect the dark tones of Dutch painting at the time. It wasn't until he moved to Paris in 1886, where he met artists like Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, and Claude Monet, that his style began to brighten and he started to use the vivid color palette for which he is known today.

In 1888, Van Gogh moved to Arles in the south of France, where he created many of his most famous works, including 'The Starry Night,' 'Sunflowers,' and 'Café Terrace at Night.' It was also in Arles that Van Gogh's mental health began to deteriorate, leading to the famous incident in which he cut off a portion of his ear.

Suffering from severe depression and a probable bipolar disorder, Van Gogh admitted himself to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Despite his mental health struggles, he continued to paint and produced some of his best work during this period, including 'Irises' and 'The Starry Night.'

Vincent van Gogh died on July 29, 1890, at the age of 37 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His art went largely unnoticed during his lifetime, and he was only able to sell one painting. However, his work gained posthumous fame and inspired generations of artists. Today, Van Gogh's paintings are some of the most expensive in the world, and his life and work continue to captivate art lovers around the globe.
